WYSPIAŃSKI
10.11-17.12.2017, Wyspianski, an exhibition dedicated to the Artist on the 110th anniversary of his death.
Interpreting the work of Stanislaw Wyspianski (1869-1907), a total artist – creator of dramas, stained glass and polychrome paintings, portraits and landscapes, and new typography – is a special adventure of the eye and imagination for the researcher, art historian or theater scholar, as well as for the viewer visiting an exhibition of his works.
On our path, the WYSPIAŃSKI exhibition at the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola, the dominant role is played by Japanese art, which shaped the language of the artist’s visual art. But not only.
The WYSPIAŃSKI exhibition signals the phenomenon of Wyspianski. It is built around several key themes for the artist: Workshop (sketches and studies), Man (portraits of friends and strangers), Sacred / Nature (studies and sketches for the decoration of the Franciscan Church in Cracow), Japonism – View from the window of the artist’s studio on Kosciuszko Mound, Antiquity (illustrations to The Iliad), modern typography – Typographer, renewer of the art of the Polish book; the exhibition closes with a space dedicated to the painter’s theatrical works, as interpreted by Andrzej Wajda – Wyspiański according to Wajda. The exhibition is complemented by works by contemporary painter Adam Brincken, inspired by Franciscan stained glass.
An important part of the exhibition is a space devoted to the artist’s dramatic works, as interpreted by the often great Polish director who reached for them – Wyspiański according to Wajda. Presented here for the first time are more than 110 objects related to the productions of The Wedding (1963, 1973, 1991) and November Night (1974). Sketches, studies, costume designs, costumes (including Bride and Groom, 1991, interpreted by Dorota Segda), theatrical props (including Rachel’s famous shawl from the film version of The Wedding) create a unique situation through which we can see the workshop of the director and set designer. 99 presented objects are the property of the Archive of Andrzej Wajda – Museum of Japanese Art and Technology.
The exhibition presents works by Stanislaw Wyspianski from over a dozen collections, both private – Amanda and Jaroslaw Beldowski, Krzysztof Musial, Elzbieta and Jerzy Stelmach, Dominik Kulkowski, Wojciech Sladowski (Polish Auction House in Krakow), and public: from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, the Andrzej Wajda Archive – Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology in Krakow, the Main Library of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, the Jacek Malczewski Museum.
