9 January – 7 February 2010
curator of the exhibition: Anna Król

An exhibition of works by Władysław Strzemiński, the most important artist of the Polish avant-garde, the ‘absolute creator’, will open at the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola on 8 January.

The occasion for organizing this exhibition was the release by the National Bank of Poland of a new commemorative coin dedicated to this artist, issued as part of the series Polish Painters of the 19th and 20th Centuries.

The museum in Stalowa Wola, in collaboration with the Rzeszów branch of the National Bank of Poland, will present the new coin along with an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Władysław Strzemiński. The exhibition will feature works from the series Faces, which is depicted on the aforementioned coin.

This exhibition at the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola also marks the first showcase in the series Absolute Creators, which presents contemporary classics and absolute artists. The exhibition is dedicated to the work of an artist who made a fundamental contribution to the history of global avant-garde art and Polish art history. We will present paintings and drawings held in the Museum of Art in Łódź, which houses the largest collection of Strzemiński’s works, as well as pieces from the National Museum in Warsaw and the Museum of Lubusz Land in Zielona Góra.

It promises to be a significant feast for connoisseurs of avant-garde art. Selected works by Strzemiński showcase the various stages of exploration by this great radical experimenter, from post-suprematist compositions to solaristic (afterimages). The exhibition will also include original interpretations of socialist realism.

Władysław Strzemiński (1893-1952) was a controversial artist, known for his fascinating life and turbulent relationship with sculptor Katarzyna Kobro. In the early stages of his career, he encountered representatives of the Russian avant-garde and the idea of constructivism, which had a significant impact on his creative thinking. He developed the theory of unism (principles of complete homogeneity of an image built on laws that act as an optical unity devoid of any contrasts). Strzemiński was also involved in architectural design, art theory, and criticism. He was one of the initiators of the formation of the group of cubists and constructivists known as Blok, and later Preaesens, as well as the famous group a.r. He participated in all national and international manifestations of Polish constructivist avant-garde art.
