The world of Toruń gingerbread

Warsztat Gallery, 17 Hutnicza St.

Torun delicacies on display at the Museum.

The eye is drawn to the high sides of an old boat, and the sense of smell is pleased to discover the smell of freshly baked dough… Such are the first impressions, as surprising as they are pleasant, of the latest exhibition at the Warsztat Gallery.

“The World of Toruń Gingerbread” is an unusual exhibition prepared by the District Museum in Toruń. The picturesque scenery provides an excellent backdrop for an intriguing journey into the past – into the world of Toruń’s gingerbread traditions, old crafts, as well as 19th-century industry and trade. Inside a stylized wooden koga – inspired by old merchant sailing ships – the main part of the exhibition is shown: among others, a reconstruction of a medieval gingerbread stall and store from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with antique objects: medieval jugs, modern guild tin mugs and cups, candy molds and colorful gingerbread packaging. The entire exhibition is complemented by archival posters and photographs, as well as characterized mannequins – colorful figures of a baker, shopkeeper, stallholder and merchant.

In the scenery of the exhibition, where the scent of exotic, aromatic spices – the traditional ingredients of Toruń gingerbread – floats, unique workshops are held. Fragrant gingerbread dough, formed into traditional shapes goes into the oven to transform into a tasty Toruń delicacy after a while. Hands-on molding of decorative gingerbread is a great recipe for fun, both for children and adults. Fun, after which it will be possible to discover the taste of Toruń’s gingerbread by tasting the exquisite delicacies of the “Kopernik” Confectionery Factory.

The exhibition will be inaugurated during this year’s Museum Night, May 17. That evening, visitors are invited to the Workshop Gallery for a tour of the exhibition and gingerbread baking from 6 to midnight. During Museum Night, admission is free to all exhibitions and museum events.
