“The Wall Speaks – Voices of the Unheard” / ‘The Wall Speaks – Voices of the Unheard’ is a modern art installation by acclaimed Polish-American multidisciplinary artist Wojtek Sawa. The first installment of the project took place at the Holocaust Museum in Saint Petersburg, Florida where it became one of the most popular exhibitions in the museum’s decades-long history. The installation was excellently received by American critics. The Polish continuation of “The Wall Speaks” project is a creative reference to the American installation and will be viewable in two cities marked by modern history, Stalowa Wola-Rozwadów and Gdynia. From 18.09.2016 to 30.10.2016 the exhibition will be presented at the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola, and from 28.09.2016 to 01.10.2016 it will also be available as part of the VIII Festival “Unbowed, Unbroken, Outlawed”, Gdynia Film Center.
„Ściana mówi – Głosy niesłyszanych” / „The Wall Speaks – Voices of the Unheard” is an interactive multimedia exhibition that, through large-format photography, artifacts and a video installation, presents accounts of Poles – witnesses of World War II who, as a result of warfare as well as the hostility of the communist authorities in People’s Poland, remained in exile or decided to emigrate to the United States. The exhibition allows viewers to interact with its material (by touching the artifacts, controlling the video installation) and encourages viewers to engage by assembling stories on the bricks that make up the contemporary “wall.”
One of the exhibition’s goals is to build bridges between the experiences of Polish children and young people affected by World War II and contemporary American and Polish viewers. The installation opens a space of public expression for immigrants, dyslexics, abused children, women victims of violence, members of ethnic and religious minorities – those who today feel voiceless, humiliated and marginalized.
Viewers of the exhibition are invited to participate in the artistic performance and can directly influence the content and appearance of the exhibition.
The installation „Ściana mówi – Głosy niesłyszanych” / „The Wall Speaks – Voices of the Unheard”, although the narrative layer focuses on the fate of Polish children and adolescents affected by Nazi and Soviet occupation during World War II, is a universal story of suffering and exclusion. “The Wall Speaks…” focuses on the experiences of ordinary people thrown into the inexorable cogs of the war machine. The installation focuses on the universal human experience of suffering, powerlessness in the face of discrimination, prejudice. By recounting the extreme experiences of World War II, seen through the eyes of children, young people, the artist gives voice to those whom society refuses to listen to: those suffering, experiencing hatred, aggression due to their own otherness, victims of a great history and human pettiness. Listening to the voices of suffering people, the artist returns their dignity, cleanses their memory, builds bridges over stereotypes and prejudices.
