Private war

Private war

1.09-27.10.2019, exhibition Private War. 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, 1 Sandomierska St.

On the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, we will recall those events, emotions, fear, but also hope, heroism and rescue. The exhibition “Private War” is not only a history lesson about the global conflict, its primary goal is to show the heroic and uncompromising or simply decent attitudes of representatives of the local community towards the occupiers. At the exhibition we present simultaneously the stories of people involved in the great actions of the local underground, as well as “everyday heroes.” There will be those who returned to their family homes after the turmoil of war, but also those who were not given the chance to see their loved ones: killed in battle, killed in camps, murdered in Katyn….
The exhibition will be divided into 5 main zones. The first introduces the viewer to the military struggles of Polish soldiers. We bring closer the profiles of soldiers originating from Rozwadów and neighboring towns, who took part in the September campaign and later continued the fight against the German invaders being already in military formations created in Western Europe and in the USSR. Photographs and biographies of the soldiers will be accompanied by militaria used by the fighting sides and elements of uniforms.

The following zones are often stories of ordinary people who fought their battle against the occupiers outside the trenches. It begins with the story of a false typhus epidemic caused by doctors Stanislaw Matulewicz and Eugeniusz Lazowski, who thereby saved many residents of Nadsanie from deportation to labor, arrest and even death. Doctor Eugeniusz Łazowski also provided medical care to Jews. He sympathized with them and did not hesitate to help them. A separate block of the exhibition is devoted to the extermination of the Jewish community of Rozwadów and the history of the Jewish labor camps in Stalowa Wola (a camp on the site of a steel mill) and Rozwadów (a camp in a forest called Młodyń), which became places of execution for thousands of Jews transported here from various regions of Poland. Another part of the exhibition covers the individual fates of resistance activists, prisoners of prisoner of war, concentration camps and those who shared the tragic fate of thousands of Polish officers at Katyn.

The last sequence of the exhibition is a reminder of German crimes, repressions, arrests and mass executions, which became an occupation reality, marked by fear and terror.

In this part of the exhibition we will present documents, photographs, correspondence of prisoners of war and those imprisoned, original “death placards” and many other valuable memorabilia related to local history.
