POLISHED UP. Design from Poland
Polished Up exhibition at Gdynia Design Days.
3-12 July 2015.
This time our exhibition is going to Gdynia. POLISHED UP. DESIGN FROM POLAND prepared by Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka and Paweł Grobelny – is a continuation of the Unpolished project conducted from 2009 to 2013, during which one could trace the design attitudes of a generation growing up during political changes and economic transformation.
The criterion applied by the curators in selecting objects for the exhibition is the cooperation between the designer and the manufacturer, a conscious decision to share the risk of introducing a product to the market aimed at a specific group of recipients. Although the target group is often elite, and the selected products are far from being classified as “mass-produced,” they are proof that the Polish market is changing and maturing. The exhibition also demonstrates that very interesting implementations are taking place, which constitute the culmination of cooperation between Polish designers and Polish manufacturers. Not all presented projects are products of large factories; some are still produced in limited series by their authors. However, those designers who have taken on the challenges of production know how to approach it and how to distribute their products. Polished Up is a subjective curatorial selection that is not intended to show what the design situation in Poland is like. It is merely a snapshot, yet according to the curators, significant and worthy of attention. Over these 5 years, one thing has not changed – Polish designers still think simply, have a sense of humor, continue to appreciate natural materials, and flirt with craftsmanship and tradition.
