Walter Gropius: “ (…) already in kindergarten we must encourage children to give new shape to their immediate environment during play. This is because active participation is a key element of planning. It is through it that the individual sense of responsibility matures, which has a decisive function in unifying the community, in creating a collective vision and a sense of pride in one’s own modeled environment.”
How do you explain to a child what a city is? How is it formed? What is the work of an urban planner? The exhibition “Paper City” answers these and other questions. Its goal is to get children interested in topics related to the city, its architecture and urban planning. Explaining concepts, terms, concepts, so that children become conscious city dwellers, so that they know the characteristics of a modernist city and in the future can consciously shape their closer and further surroundings. The exhibition is designed to stimulate children’s creativity – children are co-creators of the exhibition and actively participate in the creation of a modern city.
As time goes by, the exhibition changes, grows, new houses, objects arrive, composed of simple cubic solids designed by Robert Czajka. The objects shown in the exhibition are by young Polish designers. As the name suggests, the entire exhibition, both objects and scenography, are made of paper, cardboard and tyvek (a fabric with the properties of paper). The exhibition is accompanied by workshops for children. Not coincidentally, the exhibition “Paper City” will be presented for the first time in Stalowa Wola, a modernist city, designed and built from scratch, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2014.
