Ostrów Lednicki in the state of the first Piasts
January 9 – February 11, 2004
Island of mysteries – this is how Ostrów Lednicki can be described, an island on the lake located between Gniezno and Poznań – two well-known centers of the medieval Polish state.
Some say that it was here that Boleslaw Chrobry – the first king of Poland – was to be born. It was also here that Emperor Otto III, on a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. Adalbert, was hosted in the year 1000,” the exhibition catalog reads.
The stone ruins on the island have long fascinated. In the mid-19th century, archaeological and historical work began.
Today, thanks to extensive interdisciplinary research, we can partially reconstruct the history of this island stronghold, thus supplementing the knowledge drawn from written sources, which say very little about this place.
The exhibition presents unusual relics, little-known objects from a thousand years ago – exquisitely preserved elements of armaments, unusually artfully crafted sacralia, relics from among the gifts Otto III gave during his eternal visit to Boleslaw the Brave.
Some of the relics from this exhibition are on display outside the Lednica museum for the first time.
The exhibition is given a special atmosphere by stylized figures of medieval warriors in specially recreated costumes with elements of armament. The whole is complemented by mock-ups. and educational display boards
