In the shadow of the Roman Empire

In the shadow of the Roman Empire

October 19 – November 30, 2008

On the exhibition In the Shadow of the Roman Empire for the first time in Stalowa Wola is presented more than 500 exhibits, borrowed from the collections of Polish museums and archaeological institutes, which in an excellent way contribute to broaden knowledge about the life of the population living on the territory of Poland – in the first five centuries after the birth of Christ.

This period of our prehistory was characterized by a significant socio-economic revival brought about by the full spread and mass use of iron for the production of everyday objects.

Among the artefacts, most are finds relating to the activities of the two great archaeological cultures of the end of antiquity: the Przeworsk culture (identified with the Vandals) and the Wielbark culture, especially the Maslomec group (identified with the Goths).

The exhibition will feature a rich selection of handicraft products: exquisite weapons and weaponry elements, work tools, jewelry or earthenware.

Also on display will be testimonies of contacts between local “barbarian” communities and the Roman Empire, in which the so-called “amber route” played a huge role. These will mainly include Roman coins, luxury clay and metal vessels and swords.

The set of archaeological artifacts on display at the exhibition has been enriched with multimedia presentations and large-format maps and photographs.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog.
