In the amber trap

W bursztynowej pułapce

30.03 – 25.05.2014. The exhibition presents the fascinating world of amber.

Several hundred objects – unusual specimens of Baltic amber, as well as jewelry from hundreds of years ago and elaborate handicrafts can be viewed from Sunday, March 30, at the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola at the exhibition “In the amber trap”. The exhibition is an invitation to get to know both the secrets of amber and its history, the history of amber and contemporary trends in ambering.

This time it will begin without a grand opening – while special attractions will accompany visitors to this exhibition on Museum Night, May 17.

The sight of amber raises many questions. How was it created, what caused its incredible colors, what is the reason for its unique shapes? Amber has always fascinated and fascinates with its shape, colors and contents. It is highly valued and loved because of its abundance, ease of processing, variety and beauty of varieties and healing properties. For science, it represents an invaluable value due to the preservation of plant and animal specimens for more than 40 million years, almost in perfect condition. Thanks to these inclusions, we can learn what plant species formed the “amber forest” and what animal species lived in it.

At the exhibition with the use of modern arrangement forms, one can admire amber in various aspects: starting from natural specimens, including those with inclusions, through amber archaeological relics to handicraft objects and jewelry made from this raw material. The natural forms and color varieties of Baltic amber are presented, as well as the types of fossil resins in the world. The last theme is “amber and man.” This part of the exhibition is designed to acquaint visitors with archaeological amber wares and ornaments from the Stone Age to the Roman era and the early medieval period, but also with crafts and amber jewelry from the 1920s and 1930s up to contemporary products.

The exhibition is accompanied by films and multimedia presentations.

An attractive range of workshops and museum and art lessons await visitorsin a special educational zone. Also for the intellectually disabled and those with hearing and visual impairments, a workshop offer and a tour path have been prepared. Thanks to the use of modern multimedia techniques adapted to different age groups of viewers, one can not only take a virtual trip to the “amber forest”, but also move to the seaside beach and “collect” nuggets of amber.

In the creative activity zone designed for families with children, older and younger people will deepen the topics related to the exhibition in an unconventional and attractive way. Here, adults will spend an interesting time with their kids, using a variety of games and activities, prepared on the basis of the exhibition.

The exhibits at the exhibition come from the collections of the Natural History Museum of the Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow and the collection of Eryk Popkiewicz.
