“City and Forest” exhibition
18.11.2016-5.03.2017, 14 Staszica St., “City and Forest” exhibition.
City and Forest is a series of exhibitions and workshops promoting knowledge about animals living in cities. We want to draw attention to birds, insects and mammals living in cities, their needs, habits, the dangers they are exposed to, but also the benefits that man has from their neighborhood. We also draw attention to the aesthetics and functionality of the nesting boxes built for them. The exhibition is aimed at all nature lovers. Arranged in such a way as to particularly interest and sensitize children, who through tasks and special installations actively learn about the life of animals. At the exhibition, among other things, they will make a nest by themselves, hatch eggs in a large nesting box, see for themselves how bats sleep and how the larvae of the mason bee live.
The exhibition shows 9 stalls designed by well-known Polish designers. They themselves chose the animals for which they designed the stalls. We were interested in their choices, the way they approached the design process and the result, which differed from standard solutions. The designers’ decisions stemmed from their experiences, sometimes from current needs, but also from concerns about changes in the surrounding environment. Designers from the Beza Project group knew right away that they would take care of the swifts. Why? A colony of swifts lives on the wall of the apartment building they see every day from their studio window; unfortunately, the swifts may lose their home as the wall is planned to be insulated. Members of Grynasz Studio, have been neighbors of hedgehogs for years, hence the idea of a nesting box just for them. At the exhibition you can learn the stories of all these boxes.
We wanted the booths whose prototypes we are showing at the exhibition to meet the needs of their occupants. So they were designed according to the guidelines of scientists. They were consulted and checked by an experienced expert. Not everyone is aware that poorly constructed sheds: unprotected from predators, made of inappropriate materials, can do more harm than good. Specialists call them ecological traps. An example of a common mistake, by which you can immediately know a bad box, is a stick in front of the entrance. Completely unnecessary for birds, it helps predators to pick eggs from the nest.
Part of the project is a competition for a feeder aimed at residents of Stalowa Wola. The most interesting feeders will be shown alongside information on how and with what to feed the birds. We encourage children and parents to help animals in the right way.
