Beads of coral color

During Budapest Design Week, an exhibition titled “Korale koloru koralowego” (a play on words that translates to “Coral Color Beads”) will be presented. The curator of the exhibition, Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka, attempts to answer the question of whether it is possible to identify a color palette typical of the countries in the region: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland. The exhibition seeks to define the color identity of Poland and its neighboring countries. It analyzes the colors chosen by designers from the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary for similar objects: vases and fabric patterns. Based on the collected objects, collections of colors will emerge, including pinks and blues, greens and yellows, that have appeared in projects from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland.

As the curator states, “Individual colors are easy to define: green, blue, red. When combined, they become less straightforward; they become a language. Designers, when asked about their color choices, shrug. They say they choose what is fashionable or what sells. However, this does not exhaust the topic.” Therefore, in her exhibition, instead of analyzing the choices of designers, she focuses on the countries themselves and adds, “How we see colors and how we use them is influenced by many factors: light and surroundings, earth and sky, cities and nature. Traditionally used materials and combinations that we have gotten used to are also significant. The context is important, marked in this region by the grayness of communist aesthetics. However, designers do not reference tradition or nature. They reach for available materials and choose fashionable colors.” The exhibition will be shown from October 9 to 19 at the Fise Gallery in Budapest and then from October 25 to 29 at Designblok in Prague.

The exhibition features designers from the Czech Republic (Dechem Studio, Milan Pekar, Klara Sumova, Roman Sedina, Vessels Design, Geometr), Hungary (Eszter Soptei, Edina Andrasi, Sara Kele), Slovakia (Michaela Bednarova, Simona Janisova, Linda Vikova), and Poland (Maria Jeglińska, Monika Patuszyńska, August Studio, Sebastian Pietkiewicz, Agnieszka Bar, Andrzej Mędrek, Alicja Tyburska, Andrzej Bero).
