The museum is gradually expanding its collection of Alfons Karpinski, a painter born in Rozwadów. However, only unique works of high artistic value and important historical context are collected. Recent years have brought exceptional acquisitions of the painter’s works, which will result in a new display of his works.
In the exhibition “Alfons Karpinski. (1875-1961). In Cracow and Paris” will present a dozen of the latest paintings from the museum’s collection. It will allow to trace the development of the artist’s work. Works depicting both genre scenes from a village near Krakow and sublime Parisian impressions will be shown. It will be possible to see, among others, unique two versions of a painting of an indulgence from the vicinity of Cracow, or a rare work documenting war cemeteries. An undoubted feast for the senses will be the sophisticated, magnificent female portraits created in France, including the artist’s favorite model, Jane.
Alfons Karpinski (1875 Rozwadów – 1961 Kraków). Outstanding artist representing in Polish painting the ability to combine decorativeness with traditional tendencies of the 1920s and 1930s. He was educated at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow (1891-1899). He continued his studies in Munich (1903) and at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (1904-1907). He went to Paris, where he attended the Académie Willi from 1908 to 1912. He made several trips around Europe. He settled in Cracow and worked there until the end of his life.
He painted genre scenes and city views. He gained popularity as a painter of unusual female portraits. He was able to convey the elusive nature of femininity in his own way, hence models, actresses and other ladies willingly posed for him. He was also famous for his still lifes with flowers. He was a painter of beautiful women, delicate flowers and cozy intimate interiors. Paintings painted softly, surrounded by a mist of mystery, using the qualities of light, satisfied the tastes of viewers and critics.
