Sports in the Second Republic

Album publication for the exhibition “Sport in the Second Republic,” by Dr. Iwona Grys of the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw

The publication presents the passionate and enthusiastic beginnings of the Polish sports movement from the moment of regaining independence until the outbreak of World War II. It presents distinguished figures who formed the seeds of sports organizations, the beginnings of the Olympic movement, the debuts of Polish athletes at the Games and their first medals. The description of important sporting events is accompanied by biographies of outstanding athletes of that era, such as Halina Konopacka, Stanisława Walasiewiczówna, Janusz Kusociński and Jadwiga Jedrzejowska. The album includes descriptions of achievements achieved in such popular disciplines as athletics, boxing and tennis, but also such specific ones as aviation and Himalayanism. Also recalled are sports greats whose names have faded from memory. The whole is closed by a sports calendar of the interwar years. The descriptions are illustrated with rich photographic material.
