Necropolises of the Great War on the Vistula and San River

Necropolises of the Great War on the Vistula and San River

The collective work, edited by Aneta Garanta and Col. SG Tomasz Nowakowski, consists of eight comprehensive articles on, among other things, the events that led to the establishment of numerous cemeteries in our region, discusses the history of the establishment, development (and disappearance of some) of 22 war cemeteries that the Imperial and Royal Inspectorate of War Graves from Przemyśl established in 1914-18 in the then Tarnobrzeg district.

It presents the results of research into their further history over 100 years of existence, as well as the development of institutional care for war cemeteries in the Second Republic. There is a discussion of the collections related to the Great War of 1914-18 housed in the Regional Museum, as well as attempts to outline issues related to so-called sepulchral art.

The reader will also find a discussion of the work carried out by archaeologists affiliated with the University of Rzeszow at the First World War cemeteries in Zdziary, Kłyżów and Domostaw. The part of the work comprising 80 pages of tabular lists of fallen soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies buried in the cemeteries of the Tarnobrzeg district is very important for documentary reasons.

The book is richly illustrated with archival and contemporary photographs, and includes plans, maps and sketches.
