Conference Lasowiacki patterns according to Maria Kozlova. The creator and her legacy

The Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola is preparing a conference on Lasowiak design, which was recreated by legendary creator Maria Kozlova of Machow (1910-1999).

July 18, 2024.

The Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola is preparing a conference on Lasowiak design, which was recreated by legendary creator Maria Kozlova of Machow (1910-1999). Invited museologists, researchers and continuators of Kozlova’s work during lectures will characterize the museum’s collections – the legacy of the artist, her influence on the formation of ideas about the folk culture of the Lasowiak people, and will present contemporary phenomena of fashion for Lasowiakness and the use of contemporary designs of Maria Kozlova by rural housewives’ circles, bands, associations. The aftermath of the conference will be the publication “Lasowiacki patterns according to Maria Kozlova. The creator and her legacy”.

The aim of the conference and the post-conference publication will be to popularize the legacy of the artist Maria Kozlova of Machow (1910-1999) – Oskar Kolberg in a skirt – as she was referred to during her lifetime. On the 25th anniversary of the artist’s death, we want to bring closer her activities and legacy, from which those who remember her work draw, as well as the next generation who have no knowledge of the author of the Lasowiak designs, which she recreated and at the same time created herself. Contrasting the design on original folk costumes preserved in museum collections with the patterns recreated by Maria Kozlova and her continuators will allow us to deepen our knowledge and create a template to which enthusiasts of folk culture will be able to turn with full recognition of what is a reproduction and what is a creation. The conference will illustrate the achievements of Maria Kozlova preserved in the museum’s collections in the field of design, i.e. in her reconstructions of folk costumes, cut-outs, ritual art, paintings, pasta, etc. The role of the creator in the transmission of traditions, in master-apprentice relations in the recollections of the depositaries of her work, i.e., the artist’s daughter and members of village bands and women’s circles, will also be presented. Another goal of the conference will be to signal the contemporary phenomenon of fascination with Lasowiacki in the region, which is largely based on the legacy of Maria Kozlova and her vision of Lasowiacki folk culture. The conference will show how various Lasowiacki patterns, once recreated by the artist, are now beginning to perform a new function of universal Lasowiacki symbols, identifying the area once inhabited by Lasowiaks. The unification of design applies even to those areas that had different patterns on decorations. The conference will present examples of the use of Kozlova designs in the world of local business and institutions dealing with Lasowiak heritage. The conference will be a meeting place for various circles: museum professionals, enthusiasts of folk culture, cultural animators, members of regional ensembles and rural women’s circles, who will exchange their experiences and knowledge of Lasowiak design. The publication with patterns by M. Kozlova and photographs of old clothes, from the collections of the Stalowa Wola museum and contemporary folk costumes, will document the transformation of this design. The event was co-financed by funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage within the framework of the National Cultural Center’s program EtnoPolska. 2024 Edition.

TASK: Purchase of wheel loader Ł-34 produced in Huta Stalowa Wola for the collections of the Museum of the Central Industrial District.

The purchase was subsidized with funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the state budget within the framework of the National Institute of Museums’ own program Expansion of Museum Collections.

CO-FINANCED FROM THE STATE BUDGET: 110,400.00

SUBSIDIZED FROM THE MUSEUM BUDGET: 27,600.00

TOTAL VALUE: 138,000.00

CONTRACT SIGNING DATE: NOVEMBER 2023

The main objective of the project was to purchase a L-34 type wheel loader for the Museum’s collection. The loader, manufactured in 1984 by the Stalowa Wola Steel Mill Industrial Combine, was constructed by engineers of the Stalowa Wola-based Research and Development Center for Earth and Transport Machinery (OBRMZiT). It is equipped with a SW 680 compression-ignition engine, manufactured by Wytwórnia Sprzętu Komunikacyjnego in Mielec.
The Ł-34 loader was used to scoop, carry and load bulk or lump materials. Among other things, it was used to scoop up sand, soil, clay, gravel, aggregate and rubble from demolition work. It could also be used to transport semi-finished construction materials, level the terrain, clear snow from yards and streets, and perform many other activities. The loader could be used with additional attachments, which included reinforced buckets, enlarged buckets, forks, grabs, snow plows and others. The attachments also included a winch, very useful in the military version of the loader, which, under the symbol S£-34 as a loader-pusher, was introduced into the equipment of the Engineering Forces of the Polish Armed Forces and is still in use.
The production of the Ł-34 loader at the best period reached more than 900 units per year. Just taking into account the area of the former Soviet Union, more than 17,000 units were sold. Thanks to its popularity, it remained in production for 24 years.
The object has undergone a comprehensive restoration and is in working order. After the purchase, it was included in the open-air exhibition of the Central Industrial District Museum.
