New outdoor exhibition at Karpinski Gallery

New outdoor exhibition at Karpinski Gallery

What might a bell in one of Vienna’s churches, the diary of a famous ethnographer, a statue of engineers in Peru and a silkworm breeding station in the Georgian capital have in common? How is it that Stefan Norblin’s painting adorns the walls of the palace of Indian Prince Umayd Singh in Jodpur, India? Who were Sara Lipska and Władysław Teodor Benda? Why are they part of Poland’s cultural heritage abroad? We invite you on a journey to places under the care of the Polonica Institute.

July 14 – September 1, 2024.

Place: Courtyard of Alfons Karpinski Painting Gallery – a branch of the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola, 12 Rozwadowska St., Stalowa Wola

The open-air exhibition takes the viewer on a journey to thirteen different cities of the world, including Lviv, Tbilisi, Vilnius, Paris, New York, with which sixteen interesting stories concerning the traces of Polish material heritage are connected. We get to know unusual, interesting buildings, paintings, interior designs, tombstones, but also profiles of exceptional people whose influence on culture and art was of considerable importance.

In this story, the journey becomes a symbolic exponent. It is part of biography, history, events, and the traces left behind. Our journey is: war exoduses, exiles caused by partitions, deportations, changes in national borders, not infrequently forced by economic or political emigration, but also by artistic commissions, foundations. Today, in turn, these are also the journeys of the associates of the Polonica Institute – conservators, experts, scientists, researchers, inventors, volunteers – whose task is to preserve the heritage for future generations.

The exhibition “Journey into the Unknown with the Polonica Institute” is a presentation of the cross-sectional activities of the Institute, which has been implemented since 2017, within the framework of three strategic programs: Research, Preservation, Popularization. The exhibition has so far been presented in Warsaw, Niedzica, Sandomierz, Vilnius, Chelmno, Skierniewice.
