History

The Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola was established in 1999. It is a self-governing cultural institution registered in the National Register of Museums. It operates in three historic buildings, which have undergone comprehensive revitalization and modernization for the purpose of cultural activities. Since 2022 it has been a branch museum. The main seat of the museum since 2002 has been located in the 18th-century Lubomirski Castle. Educational and conference and exhibition space has been organized there. The attic houses the permanent exhibition, modernized in 2015-2016, entitled. “Rozwadów Station. Between Lviv and Krakow.” Its content refers to the past of the former town of Rozwadów (now a settlement of Stalowa Wola) shown against the background of the history of the Lower Nadsanie region. The second floor is a space for temporary exhibitions, mainly in the field of art, history, ethnography and archaeology.

In 2019, the Alphonse Karpinski Painting Gallery, the only permanent exhibition in Poland dedicated to this Rozwadow-born Young Poland artist, was established in the former court building. The exhibition features almost 80 of his works, the vast majority of which come from the collections of the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola. The program of temporary exhibitions mainly focuses on exhibitions relating to the work of Alphonse Karpinski, and also deals with ancient and contemporary art. The Gallery also hosts the “Karpinski” Drawing and Painting School, where children and young people, under the guidance of qualified teachers, deepen their creativity and develop their skills in art techniques.

The Central Industrial District Museum has been operating since 2022 in the building of the former school workshops, built in the 1950s. In addition to the permanent esposition “Central Industrial District. The Birth of Innovative Industry in Poland” with many references to Stalowa Wola’s past, a section titled ”The City. “The City” dedicated to children and the riddle room ‘The extinguished star of the CID – the occupation,’ the facility also houses educational and temporary exhibition rooms, which mainly present expositions devoted to the history of the city and the achievements of science and technology.

The museum also owns the historic building of the former cinema-theater, called Górka, which in the future, after comprehensive revitalization, will be the headquarters of the Museum of the Diversion Management of the Home Army.

The museum is also the organizer and co-organizer of the permanent exhibitions in the Catechetical House at 4 Fr. J. Popieluszko St.: “The John Paul II Museum” and “And Tomorrow is Unknown. Underground “Solidarity” in Stalowa Wola 1982-1989”, also prepared a permanent exhibition in the Rozwadowski ‘Sokol’ House of Culture. Exhibitions developed and prepared by Stalowa Wola museum workers can also be seen in the city space in the form of open-air exhibitions, which focus on issues of regional history, often on anniversaries.
The Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola carries out its mission by collecting and securing collections, their scientific elaboration, conducting research and conservation work, organizing exhibitions and cultural events, as well as educational, popularizing, publishing activities in the field of architecture and art, history, archaeology and ethnography. In addition, it provides scientific and educational facilities for pupils, students, researchers and historians. It actively participates in the process of shaping local historical awareness, encourages the community to cooperate in the exchange of scientific ideas from various disciplines of knowledge, and builds local identity of Stalowa Wola, the region and its inhabitants. Based on these ideas, it conducts a wide range of educational activities, directed to audiences of different ages. Employees of the education department and substantive departments develop educational programs based on available exhibitions, but also concerning the broadly understood history of the region. Stalowa Wola Regional Museum is first of all employees, professionals with exceptional knowledge and skills, thus significantly affecting the intellectual and cultural development of the region’s residents, for whom the Museum is often the place of first contact with art, culture and heritage.
The museum is known mainly for its excellent exhibitions of early art, thematic trails, promotion of modernist architecture and art collections (including the work of Alphonse Karpinski, Stefan Norblin) and art déco crafts, as well as activities for people with disabilities. The fruit of the work of Stalowa Wola museum workers is, among other things, the “Stops of our history” project. This is an attractive form of educational path, consisting of eight “Ecopoints of information about local heritage”, located near historic buildings and historical sites in the settlements of Charzewice, Rozwadów and the former village of Pławo. Thanks to them, residents and tourists will be able to learn more about the history and monuments of Stalowa Wola. It is accompanied by a mobile application, making it easier to use the ecopoints.

Museum staff are conducting long-term research work, which is successively accentuated by the organization of various events and subsequent publications. These activities involve the local community, as exemplified by the following topics: the folk culture of the Lasowiaks, the activities and work of Maria Kozlova, the Jewish community in Rozwadów, the times of the First and Second World Wars and the history of Stalowa Wola. The project “Salovolians. Who We Are,” launched in 2015, continues to activate residents, especially schoolchildren.
The mission of the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola is to collect and protect monuments related to the material and social culture of the Lower Nadsanie microregion, the work of Alfons Karpinski and Stefan Norblin and the heritage of the Central Industrial District. An important task is the dissemination of knowledge about the history, culture, traditions and monuments of the region. To this end, exhibitions, educational, artistic and research projects are organized, active publishing activities are carried out in connection with regional topics or exhibitions organized at the Museum. Employees research and assist in the search for the complex identity of the region’s inhabitants and the remnants of folk culture. The museum arouses the curiosity of the audience, teaches history and develops a sense of pride in the place where they live. It keeps alive the memory of people who originated here, ordinary residents, heroes and pioneers.
It also creates favorable conditions for cultural participation, targeting audiences of all ages and needs. It is always close to the local community, creating a friendly meeting place with the past and with people. It seeks and cares for good cooperation with collectors, regionalists, city guides, local institutions and artists, creating suitable conditions for cooperation in many fields. For visitors to our region, the Museum is a cultural and tourist attraction, and supports the local government in protecting and revitalizing the architectural heritage of Stalowa Wola. Since all museum objects are historic, constant care for their best condition significantly contributes to the growth of the city’s attractiveness.

European modernist city”, ‘Necropolises of the Great War on the Vistula and San’, ‘Jew, my neighbor’, ‘Regional biographical dictionary’, ‘Glass and porcelain from the collections of the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola’. Museum publications present very high substantive and editorial level, they are the effect of work of museologists from the Regional Museum, and sometimes their cooperation with specialists from other institutions. They also enjoy great interest among readers.

The Regional Museum is an extremely important cultural institution in Stalowa Wola and the region. It also marks its presence in other Polish cities, cooperating in the organization of exhibitions, events and publications. It is an extremely important institution for the region’s residents, for whom it constantly uncovers the pages of the past, engages in its study and cognition, inspires individual search. Local viewers also have the opportunity to learn about the works of great masters, unique monuments or original subjects without having to travel to large museums in distant cities. Exhibitions of works by such masters as Jan Matejko, Olga Boznańska, Jozef Brandt, Jozef Chelmonski, Leon Wyczółkowski and Stanislaw Wyspianski were visited by crowds of visitors, for whom it was a real spiritual feast and a great cultural event. A very important role is played by the Regional Museum in the cultural and artistic education of the younger generation. Every year thousands of schoolchildren take part in museum lessons and workshops conducted by museum educators. Whole families are also eager to take advantage of the dedicated offer of occasional classes, where they not only learn the secrets of art, but also discover ancient customs and traditions, while finding interesting passions and acquiring new skills. There is also unflagging interest in outdoor events of a patriotic nature, interesting concerts and the extremely popular annual night of museums.

25 years of the Stalowa Wola Museum is a time of extremely intensive work and development of the institution for the benefit of the local community. It is also an excellent showcase of Stalowa Wola – thanks to the activities of the Museum our city is recognized throughout Poland.
