Ethnography department
The department of ethnography is dedicated to collecting monuments of the folk culture of the Lasowiak people, who once lived in the former Sandomierz Forest, with a particular focus on villages along the lower San River.
The ethnographic collection includes items characteristic of the Lasowiak material and spiritual culture, mainly acquired from areas lying in the lower San and Łęg valleys.
The most valuable collection includes folk costumes from the late nineteenth and first decade of the twentieth century from the vicinity of Rozwadów (now a district of Stalowa Wola). Among the most interesting objects are a woman’s żupan and embroidered decorative belt from the village of Charzewice, women’s shirts from Charzewice decorated with cross-stitch embroidery, and many colorful skirts and women’s shawls from Pilchów.
Also, folk art is represented by an interesting collection of shrines and figurines dating from the late 19th century to the l. 30s of the 20th century. Among the most important are the polychrome figures of the Sorrowful from Plaw and Pilchow and the sculpture of Our Lady of Loretto from Charzewice.
A unique collection of costumes and accessories of grave guards comes from Radomysl nad Sanem, Wola Rzeczycka, Majdan Zbydniowski and Jelna.
In addition, a sizable part of the collection consists of items related to the furnishings of old cottages, economic and agricultural occupations, as well as crafts among which blacksmithing is the most fully represented.
