Conference Lasowiacki patterns according to Maria Kozlova. The creator and her legacy
Conference on Lasowiak design.
July 18, 2024.

The Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola has prepared a conference on Lasowiak design, which was recreated by the legendary creator Maria Kozlova of Machowa (1910-1999). Invited museologists, researchers and continuators of Kozlova’s work during lectures will characterize the museum’s collections – the legacy of the creator, her influence on the formation of ideas about the folk culture of the Lasowiak people, and will present contemporary phenomena of fashion for Lasowiakness and the use of contemporary designs of Maria Kozlova by housewives’ circles, bands, associations. The aftermath of the conference will be the publication “Lasowiacki patterns according to Maria Kozlova. The creator and her legacy”.
The aim of the conference and the post-conference publication will be to popularize the legacy of the artist Maria Kozlova of Machow (1910-1999) – Oskar Kolberg in a skirt – as she was referred to during her lifetime. On the 25th anniversary of the artist’s death, we want to introduce her activities and legacy, from which those who remember her work draw, as well as subsequent generations who have no knowledge of the author of the Lasowiak designs, which she recreated and at the same time created herself. Contrasting the design on original folk costumes preserved in museum collections with the patterns recreated by Maria Kozlova and her continuators will allow us to deepen our knowledge and create a template to which enthusiasts of folk culture will be able to turn with full recognition of what is a reproduction and what is a creation. The conference will illustrate the achievements of Maria Kozlova preserved in the museum’s collections in the field of design, i.e. in her reconstructions of folk costumes, cut-outs, ritual art, paintings, pasta, etc.
The role of the artist in the transmission of traditions, in master-student relations in the memories of the depositories of her work, i.e. the artist’s daughter and members of bands and village women’s circles, will also be presented. Another goal of the conference will be to signal the contemporary phenomenon of fascination with Lasowiacki in the region, which is largely based on the legacy of Maria Kozlova and her vision of Lasowiacki folk culture. The conference will show how various Lasowiacki patterns, once recreated by the artist, are now beginning to perform a new function of universal Lasowiacki symbols, identifying the area once inhabited by Lasowiaks. The unification of design applies even to those areas that had different patterns on decorations. The conference will present examples of the use of Kozlova designs in the world of local business and institutions dealing with Lasowiak heritage. The conference will be a meeting place for various circles: museum professionals, enthusiasts of folk culture, cultural animators, members of regional ensembles and rural women’s circles, who will exchange their experiences and knowledge of Lasowiak design.
The publication with M. Kozlova’s patterns and photographs of old clothes, from the collections of the Stalowa Wola museum and contemporary folk costumes, will document the transformation of this design. The event was co-financed by funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage within the framework of the National Cultural Center’s program EtnoPolska.
