Lasowiacki design in the post-conference publication entitled Lasowiacki patterns according to Maria Kozlova. Creator and her legacy - project finale

The Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola is finalizing an important project concerning the folk culture of the Lasowiak region by publishing a post-conference publication entitled Lasowiacki patterns according to Maria Kozłowa. The creator and her legacy.

As part of the project activities, residents of the Lasowiak region were able to participate in a conference held on July 18, 2024 at the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola. The aim of the conference was to popularize the legacy of the artist Maria Kozlova of Machow (1910-1999), Oskar Kolberg in a skirt – as she was referred to during her lifetime. On the 25th anniversary of the artist’s death, the museum brought her legacy of regional design to the attention of those who remember her work, as well as the younger generation without full knowledge of the subject. For those who could not attend the conference, the Museum prepared a video of the event (link to the video: https://youtu.be/-SB4M6FjXGE) and a publication introducing the topics covered in the lectures.

The post-conference publication entitled Lasowiacki patterns according to Maria Kozlova. The artist and her legacy highlights many aspects and nuances of folk ornamentation of the Lasowiak region. In addition to the Lasowiak ornamentation on original folk costumes preserved in the museum’s collections, this mini-template features patterns made by Maria Kozlova and the latest inspirations of this design. It contains articles prepared by museum workers, i.e. Dr. Jolanta Dragan from the Folk Culture Museum in Kolbuszowa, Judyta Sos from the F. Kotula Ethnographic Museum in Rzeszów and Elżbieta Skromak from the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola. Also included are texts by enthusiasts of Lasowiak folk culture, i.e. Katarzyna Januszczak of the Lasowiak Cluster and Zofia Dąbrowska of the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Culture, Life with a Hunchback. A memoir about how the Lasowiacki patterns of Maria Kozlova were created was written by her daughter Dorota Kozlova, a well-known writer in the region.

In the publication you can also see photographs of characteristic Lasowiak patterns from the vicinity of Tarnobrzeg and Grębów, preserved on clothes from the turn of the XIX/XX century, which are in the possession of the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola. The publication documents contemporary folk costumes presented by charismatic creators, continuators of Maria Kozlova’s legacy: Zofia Wydro and Barbara Sroczynska of the Lasowiaczki Ceremonial Ensemble from Baranów Sandomierski, Halina Ordon, Teresa Walska and Janina Tłusty of the Gypsy Women’s Ensemble from Gypsies, as well as Zofia Dąbrowska of the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Culture Życie z przytupem.

The publication was subsidized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the National Cultural Center’s EtnoPolska Edition 2024 program.

The publication will be distributed to all conference participants and libraries. For those interested in the subject of design at Lasowiaks, the publication will be available for pick up (until stocks last) at the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola at the Customer Service Point at 1 Sandomierska Street.
