LESSONS

Young Poland – a new trend in art

The turn of the century, one of the most fascinating eras in our culture – Young Poland. The cradle and most active center of art at the time was Krakow. It was here that the center of intellectual and artistic activity was established. Drawings and prints perfectly fit into the art of Young Poland’s boudoirs. Karpinski was a highly regarded portraitist. Throughout his life he painted portraits of beautiful ladies, actresses and models. His work is characterized by simplicity and elegance, but also incredible persistence. Despite a great many new styles, he remained faithful to the atmosphere of Young Poland painting to the end.

From Rozwadów, Munich, Vienna, Paris, Krakow….

world chamber painter

The formation of Alfons Karpinski’s creative personality was influenced by his stay in small-town Rozwadów, Galician-Copitalist Cracow, German-principled Munich, classically imperial Vienna or artistically spiritual Paris. The artist also experienced the changes of the turn of the century and the collapse and reconstruction as a result of the world wars, several times starting his life anew, as it were. Drawing on his existential experiences, he remained faithful to painting, creating his intimate, intimate world of portraits, still lifes and landscapes, which he invites us to visit….

WORKSHOPS

Beach at the Lido

Color, light, texture, stain – these are the buzzwords we will take under consideration when analyzing the title painting “Beach at the Lido” before starting the painting.

The work was created during Karpinski’s trip to Italy. We, following in the artist’s footsteps, will travel to a selected corner of the world through our imagination and create a painting work full of sunshine and pastel colors. We will get texture in our work and bright pastel colors by adding toothpaste to the paints.

PORTRAITS A STORY OF THE PAST

The figures looking from Karpinski’s portraits, beautiful thoughtful ladies, children, serious men, townspeople during their daily chores, give us a substitute of what the times and people in which the artist created looked like. During the class, participants will talk about their own times by creating portraits of their fellow artists. We will face the difficult art of portraiture, posing, and most importantly, we will gain basic knowledge about portraiture. Artistic work will be preceded by a theoretical introduction on portraiture in art.

Yellow roses
Flowers, including the yellow roses of the title, are one of the main motifs undertaken by Alphonse Karpinski. He was fascinated by them and showed them in various stages of development, creating a sizable collection of works. In addition to roses, his canvases also featured asters, marigolds, zinnias, mimosas, azaleas and rhododendrons. In this case, the meeting with Karpinski’s art will also be an opportunity to learn more about our flora, Polish flowers, as well as selected artists who drew inspiration from nature using floral motifs in their art. During the class we will learn about different species of flowers, how they smell, when it is best to pick them and where. In the artistic part we will make one of two proposals: an herbarium, or a painting work (flowers in a vase).

Scent of flowers
An original, hand-made, and flower-scented postcard or card will probably be a nice souvenir of your visit to the Alfons Karpinski Gallery. Among the proposed techniques (adapted to the age of participants) with which we will make the work, there will be gluing and quilling.
