Celebration of the 80th anniversary of the German manhunt at the “Górka” building
In the early morning of May 18, 1944, the Gestapo burst into the building of a pre-war cinema in Rozwadów, in the attic of which was the underground premises of the Home Army Kedyw of the Nisko-Stalowa Wola District. Soldiers of the Polish underground were staying there, and they returned fire on the attackers. Two AK soldiers were killed during the raid.
80 years after these events, the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola decided to honour the memory of the victims and other participants in those events in a special way, in order to save it from oblivion. On this occasion, solemn celebrations are being organised to mark the round anniversary of the German manhunt. The commemorations will begin with a Holy Mass, followed by a march to the building where the ‘Górka’ was located, where the roll call of the dead will be read and an honour salute will be fired, followed by the laying of flowers and lighting of candles at the commemorative plaque. After the passage to the Rozwadów Market Square, the second part of the ceremony will take place: the opening of the open-air exhibition Wydarzyło się w Rozwadowie. German Manhunt on ‘Górka’, a historical meeting 18 May 1944 in Rozwadów. What actually happened? and a concert of soldiers’ songs.
We invite you to take part in the celebrations. It will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about our local history and to commemorate Polish heroes.

IT HAPPENED IN ROZWADÓW. GERMAN RAID ON THE ‘HILL’
outdoor exhibition
Market Square in Stalowa Wola – Rozwadów
from 18 may 2024
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the tragic events in the building of the pre-war cinema in Rozwadów, which during World War II housed the underground premises of the Home Army Kedyw – the so-called ‘Górka’. On 18 May 1944, two Home Army soldiers were killed in a clash with the Germans: Stanisław Szumielewicz ‘Kryspin’ and the commander of the Kedyw Stanisław Bełżyński ‘Kret’.
The Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola decided to commemorate local heroes, fighting and dying for their Homeland, by organising an open-air exhibition at the Rozwadów Market Square, telling the story of the years before. The exhibition is, in a sense, unprecedented. In order to create an interesting narrative capable of capturing the interest of different audiences, the Museum has for the first time resorted to state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI). The 19 panels feature uniquely generated images that make the bleak times of the Second World War more appealing to the viewer’s imagination.
Each scene presented is accompanied by a fragment of text, taken from the account of a participant in these events – Home Army (AK) soldier Czesław Kamiński ‘Głaz’, the main occupant of ‘Górka’. This combination, despite being associated with comic book history, maintains a tone appropriate to the subject matter presented, and makes it easier to understand and remember the events of 80 years ago. This is because the characters ‘come to life’ and the audience follows them down the stairs, hearing whispers, screams and gunshots. Thanks to this solution, they somehow become participants in the events depicted.
The images for the exhibition were created using WOMBO DREAM. Due to the use of artificial intelligence, the generated images are not free of imperfections and do not reflect the real details concerning the figures and places, being only illustrations of historical events.
