Educational offerings Painting Gallery of Alphonse Karpinski
The country’s first gallery of paintings by Alfons Karpinski, one of the leading artists of the Young Poland period. He specialized in portraits of women and painted landscapes. However, this is not an exhibition “in memory”, but a place that presents one of the best collections dedicated to this artist in a modern way. The gallery has been combined with an art studio, where everyone will be able to experience the creative process, develop creativity, literally feel the art and become an artist. Alfons Karpinski was born precisely in Rozwadow (today a settlement of Stalowa Wola) and spent the first years of his life there. The Alfons Karpinski Painting Gallery is located in the historic building of the former courthouse. This magnificent edifice was erected in 1905 on the initiative of the Austrian invaders. During World War II it housed a PCK dressing station and later a field hospital. The court was located here until 2012, at which time the building was handed over to the care of the Stalowa Wola Regional Museum.
The intriguingly designed gallery space is divided into segments related to specific stages of Alfons Karpinski’s artistic activity. From sketches, which are part of his artistic education, through the section of Krakow’s Young Poland, melancholic Paris, portraits of women, salon and still lifes, to the dark stage of his time spent on the war front. In addition, the gallery space is arranged with the interior of the artist’s studio with the original easel and all the necessary tools. There is also a multimedia painting studio with interactive easels, a platform for painting compositions and graphics stations. Virtual narration and active presentations will introduce the viewer to a world where history, tradition and cultural achievements are combined with innovative solutions for sharing collections. These solutions will allow visitors to develop their knowledge of color and composition independently and interactively. Thanks to multimedia easels, we will experience the process of creating paintings, learn about the techniques and stages of painting, and most importantly, discover the history, artistry and workshop of the Rozwadów-born artist.
The gallery is equipped with ten tablets, which, placed in different parts of the exhibition, allow visitors to get to know more about the painter’s individual works. The exhibition also has a special space set aside for a cinema, where it will be possible to watch short films (animations) telling the story of his work. The gallery has a rich educational offer tailored to different audiences.

Lessons
IN THE WORLD OF THE ARTIST-PAINTER
(preschools, grades I-III of elementary school)
Inspiration, materials, tools, workshop… During the lessons at the exhibition we will consider what elements are essential in the creative process. Is it possible to paint a picture without using brushes, paints and easels? Is inspiration, workshop and graduated school necessary to create? What determines the success of an artist? We will end our visit to the exhibition in a real painting studio, and thanks to multimedia easels we will learn about the stages of painting and the tools needed in creative work.
Painter of Young Poland’s salons
(preschools, grades I-III of elementary school)
The great popularity of Karpinski’s still life creations is evidenced by the fact that in the pre-war period his works decorated many middle-class salons in Cracow. Beautiful and exuberant bouquets, sometimes with drooping petals, are considered the most interesting compositions. In addition to his favorite roses, Karpinski immortalized zinnias, azaleas, marigolds, mimosas, sensitively capturing their lightness. We will get to know some of the works even better through the active presentations used in the exhibition. During the classes at the exhibition, we will learn, among other things, what was the method of painting vegetation and what associations and emotions the artist conveys in his works.
From Rozwadów to Cracow
(Primary school grades I-III)
We will talk about the childhood, adolescence and creative path of Alfons Karpinski among his works, which were created in different circumstances. We will bring you closer to the realities of life in the Polish lands on the threshold of regaining independence and in the free Poland of the interwar period. You will get to know Karpiński as a portraitist, author of still lifes, draughtsman and also a documentalist who painted war cemeteries. The lesson will be complemented by a virtual narration with the artist’s biography, enriched with fragments of memories related to Rozwadów, Paris and Cracow. With multimedia as part of the exhibition, we will design and send a virtual postcard with Karpinski’s painting and greetings from the Gallery.
Young Poland – a new trend in art
(grades IV-VIII elementary school, high school)
Turn of the century, one of the most fascinating eras in our culture – Young Poland. The cradle and most active center of art at that time was Krakow. It was here that the center of intellectual and artistic activity was established. Drawings and prints perfectly fit into the art of Young Poland’s boudoirs. Karpinski was a highly regarded portraitist. Throughout his life he painted portraits of beautiful ladies, actresses and models. His work is characterized by simplicity and elegance, but also incredible persistence. Despite a great many new styles, he remained faithful to the atmosphere of Young Poland painting to the end.
From Rozwadów, Munich, Vienna, Paris, Krakow….
world chamber painter
(grades IV-VIII elementary school, high school)
The formation of Alfons Karpinski’s creative personality was influenced by his stay in small-town Rozwadow, Galician-Copitalist Cracow, German-principled Munich, classically imperial Vienna or artistically spiritual Paris. The artist also experienced the changes of the turn of the century and the collapse and reconstruction as a result of the world wars, several times starting his life anew, as it were. Drawing on his existential experiences, he remained faithful to painting, creating his intimate, intimate world of portraits, still lifes and landscapes, which he invites us to visit….
Workshops
Toddler art activities
(preschoolers)
This is a proposal for our youngest audience (3-6 years old) allowing the first contact with art, combined with creative activities around painting and drawing. Within the framework of workshops supporting the child’s motor and manual development, we propose free use, combining painting and drawing techniques, and above all, developing fun. Sample workshops: flowers in a vase (painting on foil), abstraction (painting with rollers), fragments of nature (taping, reflecting), landscape with staffage (painting and scratching), cities and their secrets (drawing with a candle).
SENSOPLASTICS FOR SMYK
(preschools)
For our youngest guests, we have prepared a special space allowing them to combine play with learning and experimentation. The art playroom provides opportunities to conduct classes on the borderline of sensoplastics and sensory activities, developing creativity, creative thinking, enriching vocabulary. Thanks to them, every toddler visiting the Gallery will be able to feel like a real artist. There is a choice of activities developing individual senses, such as candy rainbow, milk painting, rain sticks, scented dougholine, vegetable-fruit compositions and many, many other interesting activities.
Self-portrait
(Elementary school grades I-III)
Painting a self-portrait has almost as long a tradition as the act of creation itself. Artists honed their craft in this way, studying the human figure while preserving their image for future generations. Many of them painted almost all their lives, often showing themselves in their studio, at work, with the attributes of art or with their families. During the class we will learn about different types of self-portraits in painting, using selected examples, while in the art part we will create our own self-portrait, having a mirror and a prop of our choice.
Create your own painting
(kindergartens, grades I-VIII of elementary school)
This is a proposal of theoretical classes combined with experimentation and fun at multimedia stations. During the workshop, participants will gain complete knowledge of the creation of a painting and drawing work, from the workshop side and the concept of painting. They will see how to prepare a canvas, learn about different techniques, types of paint and drawing tools. They will learn what a composition is and what are its types. We’ll talk about colors and light in paintings and the themes taken up by artists. We will learn through action, short exercises and fun, so that in the future we can use the knowledge we gain to create our own painting works.
Master of still life
(Elementary school grades IV-VIII)
The subject of still lifes, which was very popular with Alphonse Karpinski, gained exceptional beauty on his canvases. The artist painted mainly still lifes with flowers, complemented by views of living room interiors, portraits, landscapes or images of animals. During the workshop we will learn what still life is as a painting subject and how it has been taken up by artists throughout the centuries. We will illustrate our story with selected examples from art. Learning about the issue in practice, painting our own picture, we will also gain basic knowledge about composition, perspective, colors.
Beach at the Lido
(grades IV-VIII elementary school, high school)
Color, light, texture, stain – these are the buzzwords we will take under consideration when analyzing the title painting “Beach at the Lido” before starting the painting work. The work was created during Karpinski’s trip to Italy. We, following in the artist’s footsteps, will travel to a selected corner of the world through our imagination and create a painting work full of sunshine and pastel colors. We will get texture in our work and bright pastel colors by adding toothpaste to the paints.
PORTRAITS A STORY OF THE PAST
(grades IV-VIII elementary school, high school)
The figures looking from Karpinski’s portraits, beautiful thoughtful ladies, children, serious men, townspeople during their daily chores, give us a substitute of what the times and people in which the artist created were like. During the class, participants will talk about their own times by creating portraits of their fellow artists. We will face the difficult art of portraiture, posing, and most importantly, we will gain basic knowledge about portraiture. Artistic work will be preceded by a theoretical introduction on portraiture in art.
Yellow roses
(grades IV-VIII elementary school, high school)
Flowers, including the title yellow roses, are one of the main motifs taken up by Alfons Karpinski. He was fascinated by them and showed them in various stages of development, creating a sizable collection of works. In addition to roses, his canvases also featured asters, marigolds, zinnias, mimosas, azaleas and rhododendrons. In this case, the meeting with Karpinski’s art will also be an opportunity to learn more about our flora, Polish flowers, as well as selected artists who drew inspiration from nature using floral motifs in their art. During the class we will learn about different species of flowers, how they smell, when it is best to pick them and where. In the artistic part we will make one of two proposals: an herbarium, or a painting work (flowers in a vase).
Scent of flowers
(kindergartens, grades I-VIII elementary school, high schools)
An original, hand-made and flower-scented postcard, the card will probably be a nice souvenir of a visit to the Alfons Karpinski Gallery. Among the proposed techniques (adapted to the age of participants) with which we will make the work, there will be gluing and quilling.

With the help of words, we will try to convey the unusual, salon-like atmosphere of his works, and we will talk about the themes he undertook and his preferred color scheme.
Workshop

These works were very popular among art connoisseurs of the time. During the workshop we will paste plasticine still life patterns previously applied to a sheet of paper.
