Borderland museums - A space for intercultural dialogue

The project “Museums of the Borderland – Space for Intercultural Dialogue”, whose Lead Partner is the Volyn Oblast Council, and Beneficiaries – the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola and the Center for Regional Initiatives from Volyn – is implemented within the framework of the ENI Poland-Belarus-Ukraine Cross-Border Cooperation Program 2014-2020, under the European Neighborhood Instrument, 1. Promotion of local culture and preservation of historical heritage, Priority 1.1 Promotion of local culture and history. Territorially, the project covers Podkarpackie Voivodeship and Volyn Oblast. The task set by the project partners is to promote local culture and preserve historical heritage. Museums play an important role here as a platform for building historical memory, national identity and learning about the cultural and historical landscape of other countries.

The main objective of the project is to transform the Volyn-Podkarpackie cross-border region into a high-quality tourist area that is a competitive and well-known destination by establishing an effective intercultural dialogue between museums. The effect of increasing the attractiveness of the museums will be an increase in the number of visitors to the exhibitions, taking advantage of the museum’s scientific and educational offerings.

One of the key products of the initiative is expected to be improved accessibility of museums for people with disabilities, which is why cross-border cooperation is considered extremely important by Ukrainian partners.

Within the framework of the project, a trilingual website of the Volyn Landscape Museum will be created (Ukrainian, Polish and English versions), a trilingual catalog containing treasures of the cultural and historical heritage of the Ukrainian-Polish borderland from the collections of the Volyn Museum and the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola will be published, and two promotional films about the partner museums will be produced (in Ukrainian and Polish, with English subtitles). In the course of the project, the Volyn Landmark Museum in Lutsk will present an exhibition “Art for All. Porcelain,” which is a presentation of ceramics from the collection of the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola. The exhibition will be adapted for visitors with visual impairments, among others.

Joint events, i.e. trainings and workshops, have also been planned at the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola and Ukraine. Experts with experience in providing knowledge and developing skills in adapting exhibitions for people with disabilities, as well as creating and implementing innovative educational programs, will be invited to lead the trainings and workshops. The workshop part will focus on best practices for applying new approaches to organizing exhibition activities. During the visit to the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola, museum professionals will also learn the ins and outs of museum marketing and promotion. Training activities for staff will contribute to their ability to better promote and advertise their museums and raise the level of service. In the last quarter of the project’s implementation, a conference will be organized in Lutsk for the staff of partner institutions.

The assumed effect of the project’s implementation is to improve the image of the Ukrainian-Polish borderland, following in the process of promoting cultural heritage; satisfying the needs of museum visitors of different ages and categories; increasing the type and quality of tourist services in the Polish-Ukrainian borderland; improving the accessibility and attractiveness of museums in the Programme area; increasing the ability of museum staff to provide better quality services to people with disabilities, strengthening contacts and cooperation between museums of neighboring countries; improving the institutional capacity of partner museums in the field of culture and tourism. An increase in the number of visitors to museums should also bring economic benefits to partners on both sides of the border. By valorizing cultural and historical resources, the cross-border space for intercultural dialogue will be expanded. This will contribute to the removal of existing prejudices and better understanding between nations and learning about each other’s culture.
