For nearly 30 years, the Rozwadów Gymnastic Society “Falcon” raised successive generations of youth in the spirit of patriotism and sports competition. Since 2016 marked the 110th anniversary of the nest’s founding, a publication has been prepared, which for the first time presents the history of the local Falcon center, hitherto unknown to a wider audience, in such a broad manner.
Two texts were devoted to the history of this nest. The first, by Agnieszka Mirkiewicz and Aneta Garanta, is an attempt to reconstruct the fate of the nest from its inception until the unsuccessful attempts to reactivate it in 1946. The article required a lot of effort and archival queries, as the nest’s documents were destroyed twice during the world wars. Another text on Rozwadów is an analysis of the architecture of the falconry building by Dr. Zbigniew Beiersdorf, presented against the background of other buildings of this type in Galicia.
Other articles deal with issues related to the activities of falconry nests in neighboring towns, similar in size and population to Rozwadów. Their elaboration was carried out by people who in their research work more than once came into contact with falcon issues. Most represent the Rzeszow university community.
One of them is worth paying special attention to, as its author presented the organization and operation of a rural nest, a subject rarely present in the literature on the subject. The outposts in Tarnobrzeg, Machów and Nisk, due to their district connections (all of them belonged to the Sokol Rzeszów district until 1914), often cooperated with each other, which is also reflected in the pages of the book.
The texts refer not only to the activities of “Sokol”, but also bring a wealth of information from the history of the entire region. They will undoubtedly be of interest to readers from Rozwadów and the surrounding area. A strong point of the volume are the photographs and illustrations included in it, most of them published for the first time. Greatly helpful and worthy of special attention is the modernized and graphically redesigned map of falcon nests that were located in Galicia in 1910.
