Amber in science and art

Amber in science and art

August 8 – October 13, 2002

An exhibition prepared by the Polish Foundation for Nature Protection PRO NATURA in Cracow and the Natural History Museum of the Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow.

The exhibition presents in an accessible and attractive way the history of the origin of amber and the history of its use.

At the exhibition you can see a fragment of the “amber forest”, natural forms and a wide range of color varieties of amber not infrequently with frozen traces of ancient animal and plant life. In addition, amber relics from archaeological finds are shown, as well as amber processing equipment from old amber studios and traditional Kurpie jewelry . There is also contemporary artistic jewelry.

The collected unusual amber specimens with particularly interesting inclusions, i.e. insects and plant fragments embedded in them, can be viewed by visitors through microscopes at specially prepared stands.

The whole is complemented by the film “Gold of the North” and a photographic exhibition showing in magnification inclusions from 40 million years ago
